I’m Halim Chew. And this is my story.

Running a business is about more than making sales. It’s about managing cash flow, controlling costs, meeting tax obligations and making difficult decisions that determine whether a business can survive and grow.

I know this because I’ve experienced business from both sides of the table.

My accounting background taught me the importance of financial accuracy and discipline. My entrepreneurial journey taught me that understanding the numbers is only part of the equation. You must also understand the business behind them.

Having been involved in business development especially in the FMCG industry, putting inventions into the market and the food and beverage industry, I’ve experienced the excitement of building something from an idea, the challenges of running operations and the realities of trying to make a business sustainable.

I’ve also experienced setbacks, including projects that didn’t turn out as I had hoped. Those difficult chapters taught me lessons that no textbook could fully prepare me for.

The hardest lesson was about trust

If you ask me what the hardest part of my entrepreneurial journey was, my answer wouldn’t simply be about money, declining sales or closing a business.

It was trust.

When you build a business, you place your trust in people you believe share your vision and commitment. When that trust breaks down, the consequences can extend far beyond the original problem, affecting decisions, finances and the future you’ve worked hard to build.

I’ve experienced how a breakdown in trust can set off a chain of events that changes the direction of a business.

I’m not sharing this to blame anyone or seek sympathy. I’m sharing it because the experience changed how I see business.

Trust is the foundation of every business relationship, but trust alone is not a business strategy.

Trust must be supported by transparency, accountability, clear responsibilities and proper financial information. Business owners need to understand what’s happening in their businesses and be willing to ask difficult questions before problems become bigger.

That lesson became part of the philosophy behind HacheBC.

Why I believe no two businesses are the same

A restaurant in Kajang doesn’t operate like a hardware shop in Cheras. A freelancer has different financial needs from a growing Sdn Bhd. Even businesses in the same industry can face very different challenges.

The accounting principles may be the same, but the business realities are not.

A company can enjoy strong sales and still struggle with cash flow. Another may appear small but operate with healthy margins and disciplined financial management.

That’s why I believe accounting should be more than recording transactions. Financial information should help business owners understand their performance, identify problems and make better decisions.

At HacheBC, I want to look beyond the accounts and understand the business itself.

How does it make money? Where are the costs increasing? Is the cash flow sustainable? What is holding back growth?

Because no two businesses are the same, the approach to understanding and supporting them shouldn’t be either.

Why I created HacheBC

I created Hache Business Consultancy to bring together my accounting background, entrepreneurial experience and passion for business development.

My aim is to help Malaysian entrepreneurs and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) understand their finances, manage their obligations and make more informed business decisions.

Turning experience into purpose

My entrepreneurial journey has not been a straight line. I’ve faced setbacks, reconsidered decisions and learned some difficult lessons along the way.

I cannot change every outcome from my past, but I can use those experiences to shape the way I work and the business I want to build.

Behind every business is a person carrying responsibilities that others may never see — employees, family commitments, personal savings and years of hard work invested in an ambition.

I understand that reality, and I don’t take it lightly.

I want HacheBC to be a consultancy where business owners can discuss their challenges openly, understand their numbers more clearly and explore practical ways forward.

Trust must be earned through competence, transparency and consistency. That is the standard I want to uphold with every client.
